By the year 2030, it is estimated that one in every five drivers in the United States will be 65 years of age or older. Although a person’s age alone is not a sufficient basis for the DMV to take their driver’s license away, or to initiate a “reexamination,” a person’s age does allow the California DMV to scrutinize them more carefully. For example, all drivers 70 years of age or older must renew their driver’s license in person at a DMV office. However, the ultimate determination of whether a license is renewed, restricted, suspended, or revoked for a driver of any age is dependant on the driver’s ability to follow traffic laws and rules and to be in good physical and or mental condition.
