Senior Driver Issues
By the year 2030, it is estimated that one in every five drivers in the United States will be 65 years of age or older.  Although a person’s age alone is not a sufficient basis for the DMV to take their driver’s license away, or to initiate a “reexamination,” a person’s age does allow the California DMV to scrutinize them more carefully.  For example, all drivers 70 years of age or older must renew their driver’s license in person at a DMV office.  However, the ultimate determination of whether a license is renewed, restricted, suspended, or revoked for a driver of any age is dependant on the driver’s ability to follow traffic laws and rules and to be in good physical and or mental condition.   Staying fit and active at any age will help ensure continued driving privileges.  There are some additional things you can do to help ensure safe driving:

  • Drive a vehicle with power steering, or with a turning knob on the steering wheel
  • Install a panoramic mirror on your vehicle, and/or install large side mirrors
  • Stay at least three seconds behind the vehicle in front of you
  • Anticipate danger and be ready to react quickly
  • Watch out for other drivers
  • Make sure that you are well-rested before driving
  • If you are taking any medication, check with you doctor to make sure that it will not interfere with safe driving
  • Get regular eye exams to prevent, minimize, or slow any vision impairments
